A Day for Celebration: St. Patrick’s Day
The vibrant energy of St. Patrick’s Day was in full swing here in Birmingham! This annual celebration honours the patron saint of Ireland. But did you know that St. Patrick’s Day holds a rich history beyond just wearing green and enjoying a pint?
- Who was St. Patrick? Saint Patrick was a Romano-British Christian missionary who lived in the 5th century. Captured by Irish raiders as a teen, he was taken to Ireland. After escaping, he returned to Ireland years later to spread the Christian faith.
- The First Parade: Surprisingly, the first St. Patrick’s Day parade didn’t happen in Ireland! Irish soldiers serving with the British Army in New York City held the first parade in 1762. Ireland didn’t join the festivities for another two centuries.
